Cartooning & Digital Illustration Video Tutorial

October 10, 2012 — 4 Comments

In addition to the work I do designing logos, brochures, motion graphics, and the like, I’m also an illustrator. I don’t get to draw nearly as often as I’d like, but I recorded this short tutorial last year while I was working on a dream assignment for the ever-so-excellent Group Publishing in Loveland, CO. This is a break from the norm, but I thought I’d share it with you anyway. Enjoy…

Here’s a handful of the hundreds of illustrations I completed during that assignment:

This is good stuff. I like the auto correct or adjustment made in each line. That could be a huge time saver. But I worry a bit that it makes everything look too perfect. Still, you’ve piqued my interest and if I buy Illustrator I’ll tell them to pay you a commission.

Is that sponge-like shading also done in illustrator?

Actually, I did that in Photoshop with one of the stock brushes. I could achieve a similar effect in Illustrator, but it was a big resource hog and slowed my system down. Of course, that was in CS5, and I was probably trying to do too much on one document (usually had about 10 or so of these spot illos per AI file). CS6 has the new Mercury system driving the vectors, so it probably performs much better.

Thanks, man! The cool thing about the adjustment it makes is that you can dial it in to your preference.

For anyone who’s reading this and doesn’t know, Eric is one of THE greatest editorial cartoonists ever. (Not a paid endorsement…) Check out his work at Cagle http://www.cagle.com/author/eric-allie/ or his website, Furious Diaper http://furiousdiaper.com/
