The problem being, he wouldn't be able to run with the DLC crowd, because they were all backing Hillary. And he couldn't count on Southern Conservatives because many of those people were backing Edwards. Obama's success comes from being able to go outside the old DLC establishment and bring new people into the process both in fundraising and activism...hence, his ability to win Independents in almost every state he competes in.
