Wes,

He had an exploratory committee formed for two weeks before dropping out because he couldn't raise enough money. The problem being, he wouldn't be able to run with the DLC crowd, because they were all backing Hillary. And he couldn't count on Southern Conservatives because many of those people were backing Edwards.

Obama's success comes from being able to go outside the old DLC establishment and bring new people into the process both in fundraising and activism...hence, his ability to win Independents in almost every state he competes in.

You're right, actually — Hagel actually never officially ran. He geared up and then fizzled out. Bayh, however, did try a run that never took off.

Did Chuck Hagel or Evan Bayh ever really run for President? I know their names were banded about, but I don't recall any campaigns.

If Obama were as fake as John Edwards, he wouldn't have made it past first base either.

[...] Wes Comer: This is absolutely, blatantly, and flagrantly…true. If you take a look at the charismatic, youthful (some), and energetic freshman senators that ran for the presidency recently (Even Bayh, Chuck Hagel, John Edwards…) they all fell by the wayside mostly due to the age and experience issues. Yet Obama escapes unscathed. Is it only because he’s black? Probably not. Is that a contributing factor? Absolutely. [...]
